When I first started posting pictures and interviews about body modifications on animals, I got a lot of hatemail and threats about it, and continue to. But I seem to enjoy getting that kind of mail…
Among other justifications, I explain that it's not my job to moralize on BME (although I'm happy to do so here in this blog) — it's my job to document as objectively as I can what's happening in the world of body modification, especially on the fringes that other media are afraid to cover. One of the common retorts is “what's next? are you going to start posting pictures of children with piercings?”
In the attached forum I'm very interested in hearing people's feedback. Should it be permitted? How old does someone have to be to give consent? How would your life be different if you'd gotten your first piercings at age six? What if everyone you knew had as well? How would society and your life change? For better, for worse? What laws should there be? Should I allow it on BME?

I think that it should be at the parents digression until they are 16. Piercings just aren’t a big deal. I think it looks great and if I could get it done for my children, I would.
i dont know how to comment to this…….. if the child is of a more proper age and the parent is serioiusly crazy like me then go for it but nothing likt the nipples or anything going out of boundaries
i just think its horrible to pierce or tattoo animals.. they have no say whether they want it or not yah cows an stuff get eaten thats life. but dogs and cats… thats horrible. i just think its very selfish on the owners behalf
ok this is wrong for 2 reasons.
1. if children are under the age of 16 they require parental consent to get piercings and
2. children under 10 are, under no circumstances, allowed to get piercings except for their ears. its the law. wtf are these mothers thinking letting their kids get these done. also, these children are still growing and while they are still growing it is extremely dangerous for them to get piercings ESPECIALLY on their face because as they grow older their muscles and nerves are developing and if they have a piercing in the spot a nerve is currently growing their entire face could droop. its wrong and very illegal. these mothers are idiots.

By the age of thirteen I had fifteen piercings -including a nipple piercing.
I think it depends on the kid. Some kids are more responsible and know themselves more pretty well at that age.
Those kids look pretty happy, and they can always take them out.
Its like getting a pet…only if the kid can take care of it, far as I see it. Not sure many parents would see that though, and think a lot of parents would see their kid having a piercing as a reflection (negative) on their parenting…shame. Kids are individuals too.

I cannot believe this. I know that I am young. I’m 16 I got my first piercing at 15. Goodness these girls look no older than 12.
Never mind. They are 6 and 18. I agree with Nichole. It is against the law!! that is like a 14 year old getting a pot leaf tattooed on their ass come on!!

i think under 10 is a bit much. afterwards…i think it’s based on good discussions between the parents and the child. the seriousness of what could go wrong and impending pain should be made completely obvious.
I got My Belly Pirced When i was 12 & i got a Tatto On my lower back when i was 14 & im still alive it’s really not that big of a deal …. I see it like this if the kid can take care of it it’s ok…

i got my nose pierced when i was 10 n iv continused too get more and more each year =] n got my first tattoo when i was 16, i think it depends on the child, n as long as it dusnny go infected and the child is mature anuf then it is ok.

i love piercings and im only 14 and have 3 facial piercings yeah fair enough kids will want things if they like them but i draw the line for kids and piercings i know im a kid myself but i made a life style change and im happy with my piercings and i dont think ill ever take them out except from skool and my parents were very mad when they came home from holiday and found i had my nose pierced dont do it kids you might regret it!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the age 6 is a bit extreme as a mother i would not let my 6 year old or 8 year old child get a piercing or tattoo yes you can take the piercing out but why would a child get it to look older? to be like someone else? to me a piercing is your choice but not a childs!!!! the parents should be smarter then that
lol Im 15 and i have 5 piercings lol all by my choice iv wanted em since i was 5 also here is a secret…hole close after time=] so if the kid doesnt want them…he/she can take them out and look “normal” again
this is not safe not only could this mess up there body and change how they grow this is irresponsible even with parental consent any parent who allows this should be ashamed and the piercer should have more common scence
I Think this is wrong. I agree it is a child’s decision but I do not think that a six year old is competent to decide whether or not to defile their body/face. I am 17 and have wanted piercings since I was six (and now have them)- however it would have been utterly irresponsible for my mother to let me do any harmful thing to my body at that age. Piercings can reject- the child’s face or body may be permanently scared. I think a six year old would be less likely to think of this then someone older.
i am talking i am personally a piercer my self i have 11 piercings Ive wanted all my life i am now 15 and have the ones i want under parental consent and ii wated till i was 14 cause i was already a teen i was a lil kid still
15 with 5 piercings ,you have to realize it can cause damage to the body as far as them still growing there little kids
you know.. its all up to the parents anymore.. most parents get there baby girls ears pierced when there infants.. and with the amount of people out there now a days with piercings and tattoos its not uncommon for a younger kid to want them.. because “everyone else has them” holes close.. tattoos don’t go as easily.. so if i had to choose i would rather them have the piercing then the tattoo. But that is everyones own opinion..

ok i am 15 1/2 and i have 7 percings and like just like every body else percings close but tatoos dont so like if they want it done then let then do it gezz guys its there body let them fuck it up damn
It has just been made illegal in australia/victoria (im not sure wether its country wide) that noone under the age of 16 is aloud to get a body piercing other than ears… I dont like this… i would love to get another piercing.. but now i cant.. and i got my first done (septum) a couple of weeks before it passed… and im 15.. and i dont think it fair that my younger friends have to wait years…
Well, I am totally for it. I have alot of friends with kids, who love their kids to have mohawks and what not, and as soon as they get old enough, they want to get them peirced (old enough, meaning when they can really decide for themselves if they want them). I currently have 21 piercings in my face alone, and I love everysingle one of them. I also have tattoos, and love them to. I don’t think that there is anything wrong with children getting pierced at any age, but I do think that they should require parental consent until at the very least the age of 14 and like under 18 for certain types of piercings (some can be dangerous if they are not done properly and not everybody’s body reacts the same way to the piercing and-or jewlery). I think that the parents should just make sure to check out the rep of the shops and the piercers and what not before they take their kids there. I mean, I would suggest not going to anyone who has like less than 8 years of experience with body piercing and or modifications of any kind. Just go in and check out their shop, they will let you. They want your business, so if seeing their establishment is what yoou want to be a customer of them, then they will let you.
Anyways, I will quit rambling about this. It’s just something that I am very passionate about. I believe that body modification is another form of art, and it’s beatiful.
I think it’s great, it teaches kids something about pain but also teaches them about self expression and individuality. I also think that piercings truly aren’t that big of a deal. After all, you can always remove them and let the hole close on its own. Plus I wish I would have gotten some of mine when I was younger. I had gotten my eyebrow and my nose pierced and even though they didn’t hurt, I still had to take them out for work and the piercings closed up, but if I had gotten them sooner, they would have already been healed. So I encourage piercings.

ok when i was little i always wanted a piercing but i had to wait untill i was 15! and i’m glad that i had to wait because when you are little you always want everything… but when you have a piercing on that age you will regret that
Iv got 7 piercings and im 19, wish i could have afforded them earlyr! Apart from ear piercings i think no piercings shud be dun under 10 yrs and parental consent for under 15 yrs cause most kids are 2 immature and wont piercings for stupid reasons. and tattoo rules are gud i think cause i regret 1 of mine ahwel s*** happens, its a free world
Well i think that if the parents let them they should do it. Many people and kids over 10 have them whats the differents of age. i mean their 4 years younger. As long as they have their parents with them. the hole will close.

I got my first two piercings at twelve, but come on? SIX?! I’m 14, and I have double monroes, snake bites, a septum peicing, and my cheeks peirced, but then again I’m 14. I think that any age after 11 is aceptable, but younger than that, no. I would never in my life let my daughter get a body peircing at that young…
